River Reggae

Picture

July 30, 2022

IMAGINE
Imagine taking a leisurely float down the Willamette River with a group of very cool people. Mid-afternoon you stop at a remote island, and make camp, and relax the rest of the day away splashing, laughing, and...whatever. As the sun sets make a simple dinner and enjoy a beverage. Later, as the stars come out, masks go on and the dance party begins. In the morning, wake up to the quiet sounds of birds and the rolling river. After breakfast, you float unhurried back to town.

Sound too good to be true? Sound like something you really need to do? Great! Us too. That's why we're going to do it this summer. Keep reading...

The River

The middle Willamette River in summer is warm, beautiful, and suitable for paddlers of all skill levels. It is still a wild river with hazards and participants need to wear lifejackets. Give the river a little respect and it will show you a great time!

The Float

Participants will put in at Peoria Park that has ample parking and an easy ramp for getting boats in the water. From there it is about 5 river miles to Ambrose Island, which takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on how much you want to work at it. It is another 5 river mile float down to Crystal Lake boat ramp and takes about the same time, but seems to go faster. Alternatively, participants can pull out at Michael's Landing adding about a half hour to the float. Both Crystal Lake and Michael's Landing have ample parking, but the former might be patrolled more frequently and is probably the more secure option for overnight parking.

The Camp

Ambrose is a 12.5 acre island in the Willamette River about two miles southeast of Riverbend in Corvallis. Most of the island is overgrown and the group will camp on the western shore of the island where there is a long gravel beach and modest grassy areas suitable for camping. There will be a central fire, dance area, river toilet, and plenty of room to frolic in the water and hunt for agates.

Yes, we will have extras if you forget yours or it goes in the river. Just say YES! and come dance with us! There will be special surprise at midnight.

The Details

Heard enough? Want to go?
Here is how to get involved.

What about children?
This is a child inclusive event. While it is intended as a party and some boundaries may be challenged, adults are expected to conduct themselves in a way that ensures the safety and wellbeing of children. Parents are expected to be fully responsible for their children. There will be no lifeguard on the island.

How do I get to the party on an island?
You need to be able to transport yourself and everything you will need to the island. In case you are separated from others in You will need to be able to navigate to Ambrose Island on your own. The organizers will not be able to carry gear for participants (we will have enough of our own gear for the event!).

What will I eat?
You will need to bring food for lunch on the river, snacks, dinner, and breakfast the following day. Participants will need to bring their own cooking equipment.

What about bathrooms?
We will have portable river toilets (called a "groovers"). It's fine to pee in the river, but we will need to capture solid waste and properly dispose of it (eww!). Participants will be oriented to going to the bathroom at the event when they arrive.

Who should I contact with questions?
Vince Adams is the project lead. You can reach him at 541-240-4055 or [email protected]
