He was there in the early 70's when an underground movement arose around music that created a place where queer and black people were safe to be free. Disco at its heart is liberating and and inclusive of anyone who can move and be moved. David Mancuso was pioneer in sound system design and a master of music curation. He understood that while music was the medium, the experience of the people at his parties was his art. Like David, I seek to paint an experience with a palette of music across an evening to transport people to an ecstatic place.
David's parties at the Loft gave rise to the pioneers of what would become disco and club culture. We can draw a throughline from the EDM of today back through Eurohouse, the House music of Chicago and the Techno of Detroit, to Disco in New York in places like the Paradise Garage and Dave's Loft. These roots of creating spaces where people can simply enjoy being human are core to my approach to music. |
